We may be biased as HVAC experts but we want to talk for a minute about the many reasons to get into the skilled trades. As a family company with young sons coming up into the career phase of their lives, we have had lots of discussions about education and the work force and would like to share our top reasons for getting into the trades.
- Jobs: There is currently a demographic deficit in the trades. The number of those about to retire far exceeds the number of new entrants into these vitally important professions. This shortage will open up a lot of jobs for young people going into the trades. Canada is about to make massive investments in physical infrastructure and the skilled trades are going to matter more than ever.
- No Office Life: Office jobs are definitely not for everyone, nor is sitting at a desk all day in front of a computer screen. One benefit of trades that is often overlooked is that you won’t spend your days tied to a desk. The trades are all about the practical application of knowledge and skill with your hands, both indoors and outdoors.
- Money: Attending vocational school is less expensive. It is also a considerably shorter amount of time in school, making all school related expenses less. University graduates will also have to deal with larger student loans than students graduating from colleges or trade schools. The average starting salary for skilled trades is approximately $50,000 annually up to over $100,000 for experienced workers and/or management roles.
